About Dr. Marlowe
Education
Elaine M. Marlowe, Ph.D., LPCC, graduated from Kent State University with a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Counseling and Human Development Services in 2001. Dr. Marlowe also holds a Master’s Degree in Community Counseling from Kent State University, which she received in 1996, and a Master’s Degree in Early Childhood Education from Edinboro University, earned in 1980. Her Bachelor’s Degree from Kent State University in 1970 is in Education.
Dr. Marlowe’s doctoral dissertation, A Multi cultural Phenomenological Study of How Women Develop Through Transcending the Psychologically Oppressive Aspects of Their Intergenerational Family Stories About Women was published in 2001. Her scholarly research along with clinical practice serves to inform Dr. Marlowe’s current work on a book entitled Women Who Choose to Grow.
Areas of Expertise
Dr. Marlowe’s area’s of professional competence include: diagnosis and treatment of mental and emotional disorders; mental health counseling; organizational/educational consultation and training; and individual personal counseling, couples, family, children, and group counseling.
In 1999, Dr. Marlowe became a Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor (LPCC). During the course of residency and clinical practice she has worked with the following types of client problems: depression; suicidal ideation, anxiety; post traumatic stress disorder; loss and grief; early life trauma from physical, mental, emotional, verbal and sexual abuse; trauma from dysfunctional / oppressive relationships; general relationship problems, divorce, parenting issues, women’s issues, personality disorders, eating disorders, substance abuse, adjustment disorders, sexual and gender identity issues, gay/lesbian issues, career and work issues, and school concerns. Dr. Marlowe has designed and facilitated multiple groups including: children-in-transition, grief and loss, women’s issues, personal growth, divorce, parent and child interaction, eating disorders, sexual abuse, and addictions.
Professional Experience
In addition to being a clinical counselor, Dr. Marlowe is an educator and has taught in the public school system for 13 years, along with serving as an administrator and consultant in the fields of preschool and child care. She served as an adjunct professor at a community college and university, and was the director of her own organizational consulting and training business. Dr. Marlowe is a 1987 graduate of the Gestalt Institute’s Organizational and Systems Development Program. She has also worked as a case worker in a social service agency doing intake assessment for abused and neglected children.
Professional Associations and Awards
Professionally, Dr. Marlowe is a member of the American Counseling Association and various divisions of the ACA. She was inducted into the Counselor’s National Honor Society known as Chi Sigma Iota in 1994. Dr. Marlowe was honored with the Student Award for Scholarship & Service at Kent State University in 1996. She was included in the 2005/2006 edition of the Manchester Who’s Who Among Professional Women in Counseling and Development.
Community Involvement
With a strong sense of community value, Dr. Marlowe has served in multiple roles as a volunteer wherever she has lived. She has worked in the Hematology / Oncology Clinic and Cancer Camp for children at Akron Children's Hospital Medical Center. She served as co-facilitator of a support group for children at the American Red Cross during Desert Storm. Dr. Marlowe has acted as a Crisis Intervention volunteer, foster parent, facilitator of youth programs, and liaison between local, state, and federal government agencies for the development of youth services.
